Emilie Pitoiset (1980, Paris) produces artworks that activate a series of characters and fictions through an on-going narrative that deals with the exhibition as a format, including elements such as film and performance. Her work is infused by figures such as Chris Kraus, Eileen Myles, Ann Carson, Catherine & Alain Robbe-Grillet and Dennis Cooper, that she mirrors and leads astray into a subtle “eroticization” of the everyday life. She plays with uncanny scenarios whose unfolds a surrealistic visual grammar which is both enigmatic, noir and decadent.
In her latest film, The Third Party (2014), whose script is based upon ritualised movements and uncanny situations that invite the viewer to embark upon a surrealistic rite of passage. A group of people wear black vests and white shirts as they interact in a strange environment, as if members of a secret society; the actors were employees of a German bank. The film replicates the visual aesthetic of found footage, but she was both filmmaker and choreographer.
Recent solo projects include a presentation in the context of “Double Feature” Shirn Museum, Frankfurt am Main – “It’s all the gold that i have”, Klemm’s Gallery, Berlin – “The silent actions”, Frac Champagne Ardenne, Reims, “You are late”, ceremony’ in Les Eglises, Chelles.
Pitoiset’s has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in such museums as Witte de With, Pompidou Center, Palais de Tokyo, Badischer Kunstverein, Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden, Bielefeld Kunstverein, Museum Ostwall, Kadist Art Foundation.
